O'zapft is! Counting Down to Oktoberfest 2026
Ask anyone at Bütterken and they'll tell you: German tradition doesn't just visit our bakery once a year. It lives in every loaf we pull from the oven. Our slow-fermented sourdoughs, our deep, malty rye breads, our pretzels shaped by hand each morning. All of it is part of a promise we made when we opened our doors: to share real German bread culture with the Mornington Peninsula. And while that promise keeps us busy all year round, there's one season when our ovens truly go into overdrive. Oktoberfest is on its way.
Surprise: Oktoberfest Doesn't Begin in October
It catches people out every single year, so let's clear it up: the name is misleading! The biggest folk festival on the planet actually gets underway in the second half of September, the moment Munich's mayor drives the tap into the first barrel and calls out "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!"). If October was circled on your calendar as the time to start organising, take this as your nudge to move things forward. The party arrives earlier than its name suggests.

What Oktoberfest Really Means to Us
This is a celebration we hold close to our hearts. Beer might get all the headlines, but for us Oktoberfest has always been about something bigger: pulling up a chair with the people you love, passing plates around a crowded table, laughing until late, and soaking up that uniquely German feeling of Gemütlichkeit, a kind of warmth and cosiness that no dictionary quite captures, but every good meal delivers.

Helping the Peninsula Celebrate: Pretzels, Breads & Sweets in Bigger Batches
It's also why our production ramps up at this time every year. Alongside everything we bake for our wonderful Mt Eliza community, we prepare extra runs of traditional German pretzels, sweets and breads for other local businesses who want to give their own Oktoberfest events a genuine taste of Bavaria. A pub running a festival weekend, a café popping pretzels on the specials board, a venue going all-in on a Bavarian night, whatever the occasion, we're proud to play a part in it. Good celebrations, after all, are meant to be shared around.
Mark the Date: 19 September 2026
Time to air out the lederhosen and dirndls, give the steins a polish, and start gathering your favourite people. Oktoberfest begins on the 19th of September, and in our humble opinion, no celebration is complete without a warm, golden pretzel to hold.
